Every October, communities across the nation recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) as a time to raise awareness, honor survivors, and strengthen efforts to end abuse in all forms. It is a month of action and reflection, where individuals and organizations come together to advocate for safer communities and show solidarity with those affected by domestic violence.

The movement for DVAM began in the 1970s, when survivors and advocates bravely spoke out against domestic violence and created the first shelters and crisis centers. These became lifelines that had not existed before. In 1981, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) launched a “Day of Unity” to connect advocates nationwide. This powerful initiative quickly expanded, and by 1987, October was officially designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. That same year, the first national domestic violence hotline was created, offering survivors immediate support.

Momentum continued to grow with the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1994, which provided federal resources to fund shelters, improve legal protections, and expand services for survivors. This landmark legislation reflected the collective belief that every person deserves to live free from violence.

Today, DVAM focuses on three primary goals: raising awareness about the prevalence and impact of domestic violence, honoring and amplifying the voices of survivors, and promoting prevention and support through education, policy, and community action. The official color of DVAM is purple, a symbol of courage, survival, and hope.

Importantly, the movement has expanded to be more inclusive and intersectional, recognizing that domestic violence impacts people across all genders, ages, sexual orientations, and cultural backgrounds. Abuse can take many forms, including emotional, financial, digital, and psychological harm, not just physical violence. DVAM campaigns often highlight healthy relationships, consent, and the role of bystanders in preventing abuse, reminding us that everyone has a part to play in building safer communities.
