Undergraduate Internships:
Students volunteer in the emergency shelter to support the 24 hour hotline, case management team, and the organization by developing skills in working with clients and administration. Opportunities are also available to work with the community education and advocacy programs providing support at local trainings, community events, and in a variety of other settings. Within the children’s program, students support child development activities, behavior modification, and general children and youth services.

Interns are required to attend the 52 hours to obtain certification as an advocate for DV and HT survivors. This training is completed prior or during the first 6 weeks of internship depending on when the in-person training is scheduled to take place.
Clinical Internship Program:
Our Clinical Internship Program (CIP) offers Master Level clinical interns an in-person opportunity to gain hands-on experience over a minimum duration of 8 months, committing an average of 10 to 20 hours per week. This internship is designed to provide comprehensive training and experience in working with families and survivors impacted by Domestic Violence (DV) and Human Trafficking (HT).
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Interns engage in both direct and indirect work with survivors/victims of DV and HT. This includes the opportunity to provide short-term individual therapy to clients aged 6 and up, as well as learning and facilitating both processing support groups and psychoeducational groups for community members and individuals in our emergency DV/HT shelter. Caseloads will titrate based on intern readiness and will vary based on the allocated internship hours. For example, a 20-hour weekly commitment will typically involve facilitating 1-2 groups, completing weekly clinical screening calls from incoming referrals and managing 5-6 active individual cases for direct services.
Interns also have opportunities to engage in community outreach and prevention efforts by attending, facilitating, and helping to organize events at local Family Resource Centers, participating in agency campaigns that raise awareness about domestic violence and human trafficking, and/or attending community resource fairs as schedules permit.
-
Interested students can contact the Director of Clinical Services and explore the opportunity for an interview. Students begin by scheduling a virtual 30min interview and a potential secondary in-person interview + center tour of 1.5 hours. Depending on the university program’s schedules, students may choose from either internship cohorts (Summer/Winter or Fall/Spring).
- Interns are required to complete a minimum of 80 hours of training that may or may not count towards internship hours as determined by their university.
- Training includes 52 hours to obtain certification as an advocate for DV and HT survivors. This training is completed prior to or during the first 6 weeks of internship, depending on when the in-person training is scheduled to take place.
- Additional clinical training will be provided as part of the onboarding process within the first 6 weeks of the internship.
-
Interns are supervised by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or equivalent BBS Registered Therapists (Clinical Advocate) with more than two years of clinical experience.
-
Interns receive 1-hour weekly individual clinical supervision and can participate in clinical group supervision with other master level clinical advocates/interns should their schedule aligns with the day and time of group supervision.
-
Interns can participate in Clinical Team Meetings every Tuesday from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, where the whole clinical team participates (Clinical Advocates and Clinical Interns)
-
There is an opportunity to attend all staff meetings and other agency events if they coincide with the intern’s scheduled hours.
-
Internship hours are available Tuesday through Friday.
-
Interns can choose from the following hourly breakdowns: 6 hours per day, 8 hours per day, or 10 hours per day. At least one day of the week needs to be an evening shift available until 7:30pm.
- Interns are expected to be on-site during their internship, though some remote work may be available for self-paced or virtual training and meetings as approved by supervisor.
