Maria is an elder adult experiencing domestic violence, a reality that affects far more elder adults than many people realize. When the situation in her home became increasingly emotionally and psychologically abusive, she reached out to the Radiant Futures’ Helpline looking for safety and support for both herself and her daughter.

Maria connected with our Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Program, where she shared her interest in counseling and the Personal Empowerment Program. She is now on the counseling waitlist, and her Specialist continues to be by her side as she considers her next steps, including legal advocacy when she feels ready to pursue a restraining order.

One of the strengths of Radiant Futures is the way we build community around survivors. As Maria began working with her Specialist, she was connected with partner organizations that help strengthen her foundation and support her stability. These include Chrysalis for job readiness, Give for a Smile for Medi-Cal application assistance, the National Alliance on Mental Illness Silver Companions program for mental health support, and Senior Placement Housing services for safe housing options. Radiant Futures has also provided gas and grocery gift cards to ease immediate financial pressure.

With this wraparound support, Maria has grown more confident in her ability to navigate her circumstances. She has built a trusting relationship with her Specialist and feels empowered to use her voice, set healthy boundaries, and explore what safety looks like for her and her daughter. She continues to encourage her daughter to seek services of her own, knowing that healing is something they can pursue together.

Maria’s journey reflects the courage of so many older adults who seek safety after experiencing harm. With continued counseling, empowerment programming, and advocacy ahead, she is moving forward with a renewed sense of hope. Radiant Futures is honored to be part of her support system, reminding her that she has a community standing with her as she builds a safer, stronger future.
