Ms. Stacey’s warm smile and infectious laugh now brighten every room she enters. Her joy is genuine, but hard-earned. Just weeks ago, she arrived at Radiant Futures after escaping an abusive relationship, uncertain of what lay ahead. Today, she proudly shares her latest painting from a guided art class, one of the creative outlets that helped her heal.
This chapter of Ms. Stacey’s life was not part of her imagined retirement. She did not expect to find romance after moving into a senior living facility. But meeting Erik, another resident, brought a spark of companionship and comfort. Encouraged by this unexpected connection, the two moved into independent housing together.
Soon after, things changed. Erik became controlling, then emotionally and physically abusive. Ms. Stacey made multiple attempts to leave, but without anywhere to go, she felt trapped. The abuse escalated to being a serious threat to her life until one terrifying day, she called the police. That call led her to Radiant Futures and marked the beginning of her new life.
In her first days at Radiant Futures, Ms. Stacey was understandably quiet, often staying in her room and avoiding group activities. But Radiant Futures met her where she was. Through trauma-informed care, she slowly began to open up. She attended therapy, participated in hands-on activities like art classes, and began working closely with a housing advocate and our Elder Specialist.
Over time, Ms. Stacey transformed. She came to case management meetings prepared with detailed lists of tasks she completed, determined to rebuild her independence. She poured her emotions into art classes and grew more confident each day. She explored senior housing options with guidance and was approved for a safe, affordable apartment tailored to her needs.
When move-in day came, Ms. Stacey’s joy was undeniable. Her advocate helped ensure her new space was stocked with essentials so she could start fresh. She smiled as she walked around her new home and said, “Thank you for helping me paint a new picture of peace and joy on a blank canvas.”
