Dear Friends,
Legal protections might not be the first thing that comes to mind when we think about supporting survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. However, legal rights can play a vital role in a survivor’s journey to safety and healing. These rights are more than just legal provisions; they are lifelines that help survivors regain control over their lives and protect their well-being.
Radiant Futures’ legal advocates can assist survivors in applying for various protections, such as:
- Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs): These orders allow survivors to petition for the removal of firearms from individuals who pose a threat to their safety.
- The Safe at Home PO Box Program: This program helps survivors maintain their privacy by providing a substitute address for their mail, ensuring their location remains confidential.
- Restraining Orders: These are legal documents that prohibit the person who caused harm from contacting or coming near the victim, offering a layer of legal protection and peace of mind.
Our advocates are also trained to educate survivors on their workplace rights, including the right to take time off from work to attend court hearings, seek therapy, engage in activities essential to their recovery, and request accommodations at work to increase their safety.
The legal system is nuanced and complex, which can be overwhelming, especially for survivors. At Radiant Futures, survivors are never alone in this process. Our legal advocates provide support by explaining available protections, assisting with paperwork, accompanying survivors to court, and serving as a sounding board as they navigate their journey.
With appreciation,
Mark
