IF YOU NEED HELP NOW, CALL OUR 24-HOUR TOLL FREE HELPLINE: 877-531-5522 7 DAYS A WEEK

When Elmer picked up the phone to call a 24-hour helpline, their hands were shaking. It had taken years to reach that moment, years of living with physical and emotional abuse, and years of carrying fear that extended far beyond their relationship.

Elmer’s life had never been simple. As a non-binary person on the autism spectrum, living with anxiety and depression, and navigating the uncertainty of undocumented immigration status, even small decisions could feel overwhelming. Reaching out for help was not just difficult. It felt risky.

They had come to the United States from Mexico as a teenager with their family, building a life while learning to navigate systems that often felt confusing and inaccessible. Limited English and past experiences made it hard to trust that they would be understood, especially by institutions like the courts or law enforcement. In stressful moments, their thoughts could scatter, making it hard to speak clearly or advocate for themselves. For a long time, staying silent felt safer than being misunderstood.

But over time, something began to shift inside Elmer.

After years of enduring abuse, they made a decision that felt both frightening and necessary. They reached out for support.

When Elmer connected with a Legal Advocate, they didn’t find someone who took control of the situation. Instead, they found someone who listened. Someone who gave them space to think, ask questions, and move forward at their own pace.

Through those conversations, Elmer began to understand more clearly what options were available to them. They explored what safety could look like in their own life, and what steps felt possible. For the first time, the process felt less like something to fear and more like something they could navigate.

Not every option felt right. Elmer chose not to file a police report. They chose not to meet with an attorney. These were not easy decisions, but they were theirs, and they were respected.

Eventually, Elmer decided to seek protection through the court.

They took the lead in preparing for that step, with support available when they needed it. Together with their advocate, they completed the paperwork for a Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order and went to Lamoreaux Justice Center to file. It was a moment filled with nerves, but also a quiet sense of determination.

When the temporary restraining order was granted, it marked an important step forward, not because someone had solved the situation for Elmer, but because Elmer had taken action to protect themselves.

In the weeks that followed, they continued preparing for their hearing. Knowing what helped them feel grounded, Elmer worked with their advocate to arrange for an interpreter and a disability accommodation, ensuring they would have the time and space they needed to communicate clearly.

On the day of the hearing, Elmer showed up ready.

They spoke when it mattered. They asked for what they needed. And when the judge granted their request for protection, it reflected the steps Elmer had chosen to take to change their situation.

Today, Elmer is safe, staying with a trusted friend and beginning to rebuild stability in their life. They are also exploring longer-term options, including applying for a U Visa, a special form of protection for survivors of crimes such as domestic violence, with the support of an immigration representative.

The path forward is still unfolding.

But Elmer is no longer navigating it alone and no longer without choices.

What once felt out of reach is now something they are actively building, step by step, on their own terms.
