Some things should never have to be said. And yet, every April, we say them anyway, because the children who need us are counting on us.

Child abuse is one of the most pressing public health crises in our country. According to the Children’s Bureau, an estimated 600,000 children in the U.S. experience abuse or neglect every single year. Behind that number are real children, in our neighborhoods, our schools, our communities, navigating experiences no child should ever face.

The impact doesn’t end with childhood. Trauma has a long reach. Children who experience abuse are at greater risk for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use challenges as they grow. And without intervention, these cycles have a way of continuing, quietly and painfully, across generations.

That is exactly why Radiant Futures has shown up for Orange County families for nearly 50 years.

We know that domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking are not separate problems. They are deeply connected, and they demand a response that sees the whole person and the whole family. Since 1976, we have been that response, offering survivors and families the resources, safety, and support they need to heal and build something better.

This April, we are proud to serve as a member of the Blue-Ribbon Committee in partnership with the Raise Foundation, helping bring Child Abuse Prevention Month awareness to every corner of our community through multilingual kits, educational resources, and outreach designed to meet people wherever they are.

Because awareness is only the beginning. Through our services, we walk with families through what comes next: counseling, emergency shelter, legal assistance, and parenting support. We help communities recognize the signs of abuse and understand that early intervention is one of the most powerful tools we have for breaking cycles that have gone on far too long.

What does that intervention look like? It looks like a young father walking through our doors, uncertain and exhausted, deciding to try. It looks like Diego’s story you are about to read.
