Alejandra’s journey toward healing began when she made the courageous decision to leave her partner who was abusive after enduring three difficult years of dating. The relationship had taken a severe toll on her mental health, causing her to experience mild panic attacks even before she left. But as she attempted to rebuild her life, her anxiety worsened. Alejandra soon faced more frequent panic attacks, along with disturbing olfactory hallucinations, which severely limited her ability to function in daily life. Recognizing her need for help, the La Habra Family Resource Center referred her to Radiant Futures for specialized support in dealing with the severe anxiety triggered by domestic violence.
When Alejandra first began counseling, her anxiety was overwhelming. She frequently visited the hospital due to debilitating panic attacks and distressing symptoms, like the sensation of being able to “taste” unpleasant smells, which intensified her suffering. She recounted how her abusive relationship not only eroded her sense of safety but also greatly affected her ability to engage in basic activities like walking, driving, or even doing household chores. The constant fear and tension from living in an abusive environment had gradually chipped away at her emotional resilience.
Throughout her treatment, Alejandra worked closely with her counselor to identify the triggers that escalated her anxiety. Slowly but steadily, she started to regain control over her life. By the middle of her counseling journey, she noticed significant progress. Alejandra began taking short walks, which improved both her mental and physical well-being. As her anxiety subsided, she found new strength and confidence in managing her symptoms.
By the end of her counseling services, Alejandra experienced a remarkable transformation. Her anxiety had reduced to a manageable level, allowing her to participate in support groups and connect with a community that understood her struggles. She expressed gratitude for the tools and guidance that helped her regain control over her life. Today, Alejandra stands as a testament to the power of resilience, finding both healing and hope after the trauma of domestic violence.
