In July of this year, Linda and her two young children entered our emergency shelter after fleeing the depths of domestic violence. Linda had suffered physical, verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse by her partner for many years. Not knowing where to go or how to seek help, Linda remained in the abusive relationship. Finally, this year she decided to break free and ask for help.
When she and her children arrived at the shelter, Linda began to work closely with her Advocate to discuss her short- and long-term goals. She had been in school when she and her children fled their home and was able to continue attending classes without interruption. Her advocate connected her to both our Legal Advocacy and Clinical Advocacy programs, and additionally helped her apply for a housing voucher from our local Housing Authority. While in our shelter, Linda began applying for jobs and soon found a position in a local medical office, and recently learned that she was approved for her housing voucher.
Along with the supportive services that were provided to Linda while at Radiant Futures, the support she received from her Housing Advocate allowed her to overcome barriers and empower herself to regain self-sufficiency and stability. Linda has expressed feeling grateful for the support she received from Radiant Futures and shared a message to those who have experienced similar situations of domestic violence: “Please know that it will get lonely once you’ve taken a new journey away from what caused you harm. It won’t always be easy, but you’ve accomplished what others might not be able to. But know it only gets better! Life is too beautiful to live trapped and abused. Bloom as we all have a purpose in this life, and don’t forget to always believe in yourself.”
