For 50 years, Radiant Futures has walked alongside survivors as they make decisions about their safety, families, and futures. We have learned that safety looks different for everyone.

For one person, safety may mean leaving home. For another, it may mean staying while quietly preparing for what comes next. It can mean naming a trusted person to call, finding a safe place for a pet, protecting important documents, or knowing where to turn when something feels wrong.

That is where a safety plan can help. Personalized and practical, it outlines what you may need before, during, or after an unsafe situation, while keeping each choice in your hands.

What Can Be Part of a Safety Plan?

Every situation is different, but a safety plan may include:

  • People you trust. Identify a friend, family member, neighbor, coworker, or advocate you can contact for support. A code word can signal that you need help without explanation.
  • Important information. Keep copies of identification, birth certificates, medications, financial or immigration documents, and custody paperwork somewhere safe and accessible.
  • Technology and privacy. Review passwords, location sharing, connected devices, and social media privacy. Consider whether changes could be noticed before making them.
  • Children and pets. Consider what children may need and who they can contact in an age-appropriate way. Plan for pet medications, food, records, or a safe place to go.
  • Money and transportation. When possible, plan how to access money, transportation, or keys if needed unexpectedly.
  • Places you can go. Identify where you would feel safe, whether with someone you trust, in public, or through a local support organization.

You Don’t Have to Wait for an Emergency

Safety planning is not only for someone preparing to leave. Creating a plan does not require any particular decision. It simply creates options.

Over the past 50 years, our understanding of safety has grown with the people we serve. It includes physical safety, emotional wellbeing, housing stability, financial security, legal support, privacy, and the freedom to choose.

Radiant Futures advocates can help you think through your choices and build a plan around your circumstances and goals.

Your safety. Your choices. Your future.
